Health Care Week

Health Care Week May 11 - 15

The community visited First Care Medical Services during Health Care Week when workshop opportunities were offered.  The informal workshops gave visitors the opportunities were offered.  The informal workshop opportunities were offered.  The informal workshops gave visitors the opportunity to see the medical providers in a different setting, where the relaxed atmosphere encouraged those present to ask questions and clarify points of interest for them.  Sandwiches and fruit were provided to munch while they listened.

On Monday, Dr. Glenn Johnson, orthopedic surgeon, presented information on the partial knee replacement, but he also answered questions on other types of orthopedic surgery.  Dr. Johnson showed knee models complete with replacement hardware and explained their benefits.  He also explained the progress and changes that have been made in procedures and equipment in orthopedic surgery.

During the Thursday workshop, Dr. Darren Swanson, family practice physician at Innovis, briefly discussed the recent swine flu news and answered questions.  Dr. Swanson introduced Dr. Jared Aelony, podiatrist.  Dr. Aelony, who was seeing patients in Fosston on Thursday, gave a brief description of the work of a podiatrist and answered questions.

Dr. Swanson then listed the different specialty doctors who came regularly to Innovis and First Care: Dr. Steve Strinden, urology; Dr. Franscisco Belizario, ENT; Dr. Glenn Johnson, orthopedics; Dr. Ngozi Okoro, hematology and oncology; and Dr. John Ragan, cardiologist.  By bringing specialists to Fosston, patients are not required to drive the many miles necessary to go out of town to see a specialist.  First Care Medical Services and Innovis Health are working together to bring health care to the patients close-to-home.

On Friday, Chantel Wickham and Vickie Anderson, physical therapists at First Care, talked about three subjects that can enhance quality of life.  They discussed exercises and treatments that can prevent incontinence, a sore jaw and improve balance problems.

It was busy throughout the week with activities in all departments as First Care celebrated Health Care Week.  Health Care Week is an opportune time to stop and appreciate all the medical services that the community enjoys, and to note how fortunate this community is to have a variety of medical care available close-to-home.
