First Care Nurse earns Certification

Jamy Fuglseth, RN, earns National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses certification

First Care staff member Jamy Fuglseth, RN, has successfully met the requirements by the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses (NBCHPN) to be credentialed as a Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse.

A nursing professional with over 15 years of experience, Fuglseth works for First Care's Hospice and Home Care, which provides in-home healthcare from its headquarters in Fosston.  As a nurse case manager, Fuglseth is responsible for coordinating healthcare for patients who are recovering from an illness or injury (surgery, heart attack, etc...) or for those patients diagnosed with a terminal illness as they face the end of their life.

"Preparing for the certification exam added a great deal to my practice as a hospice nurse caring for the dying.  I attended two full 8-hour days of education on end of life care including symptom management, pain management, the dying process, grief support, spiritual care, psychosocial issues, family dynamics and pharmacology.  This education provided good information to help study for the exam, but the test questions focused on my experience in hospice and end of life patient care.  The entire process increased my knowledge of hospice and palliative care, which I feel directly benefit my patients and families," commented Fuglseth.

Fuglseth joins just 163 nurses throughout Minnesota who have received the CHPN certification.  Fuglseth is not the only First Care nurse who carries the certification.  "We are fortunate to have this level of expertise on our team to better serve rural patients," commented Jodi Nelson, First Care's Director of Home Services. "Both Fuglseth has played a key role in leading our hospice patient care team," according to Nelson.

The three-hour Certification Examination was developed by nurses who work with end of life patients in hospice care.  Topics covered by the test include terminal illnesses and their symptoms, pain and symptom management specific to a variety of diseases, psychosocial issues, quality measures, spiritual care, grief and loss as well as legal and ethical issues surrounding terminal illness.

Based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the NBCHPN is the only organization of its kind that promotes the delivery of comprehensive end-of-life nursing care through the certification of qualified practitioners. NBCHPN is part of the Alliance of Excellence in Hospice and Palliative Nursing, which includes the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation.  Together, the organizations are working to lead the way in the advancement of the rapidly growing and increasing important hospice and palliative care nrusing specialty.
